The San Pablo Academic and Cultural Center is located in the heart of the historic center of the city of Oaxaca in what was part of the former convent of San Pablo, colonial building which dates from the 16th century, but by the telluric movements constantly wagging Oaxaca has had many modifications.

The purpose of the Cultural Center is "valuing the multicultural, mostly indigenous, heritage of Oaxaca and Mexico".

"The San Pablo Academic and Cultural Center is involved in the study, documentation, and preservation of knowledge and cultural manifestations that are being transformed or that are disappearing, but also promotes and open adequate spaces for cultural expressions, both, traditional and innovative, of the indigenous cultures.

In the first year of its existence, the staff of the Center has coordinated, advised or participated in academic and cultural projects in more than 50 different communities of the State of Oaxaca. In the city of Oaxaca, the Centre has organized exhibitions, seminars, courses, presentations and conferences, among including one of the most important international congresses on the Mesoamerican indigenous languages".
