The northern Sierra of Oaxaca is an exceptional place. A real niche, not only ecological and natural beauties, but mainly by its human and cultural wealth. But one of the unsurpassable "jewels" of this corner of the State is without a doubt Capulalpam de Mendez.

At the top of the Oaxaca mountains, in one of the most important festivals of our culture, in the early evening, with a clean and clear sky, with a beautiful Moon big and generous, in the center of a pantheon, I had the opportunity to speak, perhaps the most moving talk about our old grandparents, that I have been able to pronounce in my life.

In the heart of the mountains of Oaxaca, it is one of the most significant populations of the state, in terms of music and culture. Pulsating center of the most intimate affairs of Mixe peoples mixes and holder of the heritage and tradition.

Santa Maria Tlahuitoltepec is located at the feet of the legendary mountain, the Cempoaltlepetl, in which "Condoy" lives, mythical ancestral character of the Mixe culture that embodies the archetype of the "God-Solar-Warrior", invincible holder of the culture.

The mixes are a very special people, within the cultural concert, linguistic and ethnic, that Oaxaca means for Mexico and the world. The mixes are proud people owners of themselves. Attached to their mountains and traditions, face the attacks of modernity, consumerism and globalization, with an amazing dignity.

A great cultural legacy probably born since the preclassical period in Olmec times. Perhaps the wise men owners of the movement and measure came up from the plains of the Gulf of Mexico, looking for the highest mountains, as a symbol of superior exaltation.

Other legends say that the Mixe people came from the Tawantinsuyo, South America. Also could have been peoples that lived in the valleys Central of Oaxaca and at the cultural collapse of Monte Alban, at the end of the classical period, emigrated to the mountains. What is certain is that their origin is lost in the Anahuac mystery of time.

Santa María Tlahuitoltepec, according to the researcher Frank Diaz in Nahuatl language means "The Hill of the Toltec light", is currently the cultural epicenter of the Mixe region, especially in terms of music.

In fact, Mixe peoples in general, but Tlahuitoltepec in particular, are completely musical. Music boils in the blood of every Mixe and reverberates with any wind instrument. Music bands and their philharmonic Mixes are recognized for their quality and sensitivity in Oaxaca and around the country.

But its people, is the very reflection of their ancestral culture. Their existential dignity, stoicism to destiny. Their love for earth and their ancient customs. The mixes are a people that transcend history and look to the future from the entrails of their "sacred mountain".

The human depth in the life of the people who speak, eat, feel, see, work, love the Mixe culture is extraordinary. Their internal strength, character temperance, frugal and simple attitude before the life, is a tremendous devastating force.

They have been here for thousands of years. They have stoically endured stark colonization in the last five centuries. They know what to expect and wait for it. And will remain here until the end of time. The mixes are a very solid, strong and resistant culture. Indigenous peoples are the future.

The mixes are a people "of real people". People who live in harmony with earth, the sun, moon and stars. That respect nature and take from it only what is necessary. Humans who develop in their simple and everyday living, the spirit potential.
